Open Streets Day activates 10 cities in Spain!
We are very excited to announce that one of our flagship countries for the first European Open Streets Day, Spain, has 10 confirmed cities that are set to get their inhabitants physically active with lots of different activities such as zumba, yoga, pilates, spinning and more.
The main aim of the Spanish events is to promote streets as a space for physical activity, culture and social pleasure. The first city that joined the cause were Burriana and we used them as a great example that inspired other towns and cities to join in. Now it has grown to 10 confirmed cities - including the capital city Madrid!
Spain’s National Coordinator, Andreu Raya Demidoff from Deporte para la Educación y la Salud, is putting all his efforts and passion into spreading the message of Open Streets Day in the lead-up to this Sunday’s events.
“Personally I believe Open Streets Day is just the starting point of many other opportunities to network with cities for a sustainable urban future. If we can mix needs, policies, strategies and interests (environmental, social, security, sport, health) in a single concept of a future city much more human, we could all enjoy much happier healthier cities. There’s a lot of potential and it has been really rewarding getting all these cities involved.”
Open Streets Day Spanish coordinators joined forces with their counterparts of the European Mobility Week to create the synergies between the two initiatives. There is an important commitment to sustainability through the policies and actions promoted by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the highest body responsible for promoting EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK in Spain and also the Spanish network of healthy cities – RECS, an organisation whose technical secretariat is part of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces - FEMP. The Ministry of Ecological Transition has spread the message of Open Streets Day with all the cities in Spain to encourage active sustainable transport and physical activity for a future city much more human-centred.
